Rationale:
Music is an integral part of each of our lives; it is all around us everyday. It therefore makes a great deal of sense that we would educate our children to better understand and enjoy the music that is 'with' them in their day-to-day lives. The core philosophy of both the Primary and Secondary Music Program here at St Martins is simple - that music cannot be known except by direct experience. We aim to immerse students in a range of Music experiences and activities relating to the core learning strands of the South Australian Curriculum (SACSA Framework); Arts Practice, Arts Analysis and Response and Arts in Context.
Classroom Music:
Our Music Specialist teachers teach each class a comprehensive music program starting at Reception right through to Senior Secondary. The classroom Music encourages students to develop their appreciation and understanding of Music through a range of practical and theoretical activities.
Instrumental Music Program:
The instrumental Music program at St Martins has been thriving for many years and boasts a diverse offering of instruments and dedicated teachers.
Instruments offered include:- Piano
- Guitar
- Drums/Percussion
- Voice (singing)
- Strings
- Woodwind
Choral Groups:
There are three choral opporunities for students;- Junior Choir - Year 2 - 4
- Primary/Festival Choir - Year 5 - 7
- Senior Vocal Ensemble - Year 8 - 12
Concerts & Musicals:
A Reception to Year 5 concert is held bi-annually on campus. Each class works as a team to compose and produce an item for presentation at this much anticipated event. These performances are often the highlight of the year for many parents, families and friends and the multi-purpose hall is packed to capacity each and every year a performance is held. The 2008 concert was held during Week 6 of Term 2 and as always was a resounding success!
Millicent Music Festival:
The College participates in this annual festival. A large part of the choir's work during the year is in preparation for the Festival which is held in October/November. Participation is voluntary for students in Years 5-7 but a commitment is required once the program is underway. The students participating in the Festival Choir learn a number of songs from a variety of genres - it is always a thrill to see students learning and enjoying music from outside their own musical tastes.
Friday Worship Services:
Each class at St Martins takes responsibility for the running of Friday's worship service (also open to parents, families & friends). Students are called upon to introduce songs, lead prayers and assist in the delivery of the Message. From a very young age (Reception onwards) students become comfortable standing before a large group of people. Students are also given opportunities (from year 3 upwards) to perform in the Worship Band, lead the singing and perform actions. There can be no doubt that all of these activities contribute to the development of important performance skills and understandings, but more importantly to the self-esteem and self-confidence or each individual child.
